Euphradian Foundation Hosts 5th Annual Debate Workshop
On February 20, 2018, the Euphradian Foundation hosted its 5th annual debate workshop in conjunction with the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA). Led by Euphradian secretary Nick Wilson ('15) and board member Trey Gordner ('13), the event brought together students and coaches from schools across the state to the campus of the University of South Carolina. Welcoming students of a variety of ages and skill levels, the workshop featured novice, intermediate, advanced tracks, as well as offering a specialized coaching session. Together with members of the Euphradian Society, the students practiced old skills and acquired new ones, with particular attention devoted to argumentation, research, and crossfire techniques. The students spent the afternoon session analyzing a public debate in a group format or practicing debate with predetermined resolution.
Participants praised the event as “very thorough” and noted that “everything was very fun, helpful, and well-organized.” Students expressed their delight at getting to visit USC and appreciated the practical nature of the program, regarding “the detailed explanations and the actual student debate … [as] the most worthwhile.”
As the Euphradian Foundation’s flagship program, the debate workshop advances the Foundation’s mission of promoting education in the liberal arts and the practice of oratory in the interests of a free and ordered society.
